Chanson to dance to from the Le Pop DJ team. "Le Pop-La Boum!" In the tradition of "Le Pop en duo" and "Le Pop Les Filles" another special themed edition out of the serially numbered order. We have created an album out of our party DJ sets with songs that have never been featured on "Le Pop" before, but which are extremely danceable. 13 of the 16 artists are featured for the first time.

Luce

Luce is amusing, likeable, eloquent, blessed with comedic talent and an elegant and keen voice. How on earth could someone like that win a casting-show (“Nouvelle Star”)? An obvious question, and yet casting-shows in France have been known to pave the way to a veritable career for unconventional characters – Luce is not alone in that regard. After a debut album featuring a number of songwriters, Luce chose to collaborate with Mathieu Boogaerts on the wonderful sequel “Chaud”. It’s hard to imagine a more harmonious duo. And not only do the two work perfectly together in the studio – they mesmerize their audiences when they perform live.

Radiomatic

The partners in music behind the name Radiomatic are Fredda and Pascal Parisot. She sings like an angel, and he has started to write terrifi c children’s songs. Both have been featured on this series repeatedly since Le Pop 2 – back when Parisot was still making music for adults. Radiomatic play nothing but covers of classic hits fr om the 60’s YéYé era – an extremely entertaining side project for both musicians. Two albums have been released so far, and both are a must at any party. “Eclipse Twist” was originally sung by Italian singer Mina and was featured on the soundtrack to the Antonioni movie “L’eclisse” (English title: Eclipse). The Radiomatic cover infuses the song with a good deal more drive and humour.

Call Me Poupée

Sometimes, a travelling record collector can be incredibly lucky. In a little record store in Montréal, in a corner dedicated to local bands, at the top of a pile of CDs, this lucky tourist stumbled across Call Me Poupée’s album. A couple of days later, the same crazy duo played in a run-down arcade, between billiard tables and slot machines – twice lucky. A fitting ambience for their playful gimmick-Rock’n’Roll with surf-guitars, drum computer, synthie sounds – all manner of retro-chic and burlesque flair. The superb, but unfortunately sole album by Call Me Poupée, “Western Shanghai”, is guaranteed to be an excellent addition to any record collection.

Cléa Vincent

When we sent our good friend Mikael Lecumberry aka Toma the initial track list for this compilation, his dry response was: Cléa Vincent is missing, otherwise great. And right he was; It’s hard to get more La Boum than "Jmy attandais pas" – a song that sounds like it was made for a Le Pop with a pink cover. Classified as Electro-Pop by her label, to us the sound is simply contemporary Disco. Vincent is a very promising songwriter, and a singer with a personal touch that is as French as it gets, but very distinct all the same. The French press have already fallen for her – even before the release of her debut album.

Julien Baer

We have been waiting for an opportunity to introduce Julien Baer for a while now. He prefers to keep to the sidelines and only releases new music every couple of years. In the meantime, he also composes soundtracks. He leaves the limelight to his brother Édouard, known for his roles in the Asterix movies. Julien Baer’s songs, like his personality, are more reserved but rich with poetry and warmth. “Soul without sugar” is how Bertrand Dicale describes the music in the press release for his last album “Le La”, which has been around for quite a few years now. Music journalist Olaf Karnik compares the Funk of “Roi de l'underground” to the New Orleans school, and indeed: the hypnotic groove of the track is reminiscent of the dry sound of The Meters. Th e last French musician to manage that sound was Max Berlin in his “Elle et moi”, and that was decades ago.

Arthur H

Two famous sons of two equally famous fathers. There is no real need to introduce the superstar –M– aka Matthieu Chedid; apart from anything, in this context Louis Chedid’s junior is merely Arthur H’s duet partner. Chansonnier Arthur H has filled his father Jacques Higelin’s shoes and then some. The smokey quality of his voice is reminiscent of Tom Waits; and that not only when it is just him at the piano. In France he is best known for his shows, of which there are an incredible four (!) live albums. There is no doubt he is an excellent songwriter and arranger. “Est-ce que tu aimes?” is an imaginative Chanson-dialogue between the two men’s strongly contrasting voices, with a Mariachi trumpet forming a smooth bridge between them.

Alexis HK

Oops, that’s the second cover on this compilation. A track originally released on the tribute album “Autrement Dit”, dedicated to the great entertainer and chansonnier Claude Francois, whose songs are invariably played at any “La Boum” celebration in our neighbouring France. The song “Belles, belles, belles” was not actually composed by Claude Francois himself, but is a French adaptation of an Everly Brothers hit. Francois did however write a number of internationally known melodies, including “Comme d’habitude”, which Frank Sinatra translated into the international hit “My Way”.

Oai Star

This catchy tune by Oai Star, a side project of Massilia Sound System, turned into a real radio sensation. The title implies a love song, but in actual fact “Cheri(e)” is simply a list of household chores. A little ridiculous, sure, but like an audacious joke just bordering on provincial machoism. And to make sure you don’t miss the irony, the music video shows a man doing the sweat-inducing work. The text to “Cheri(e)” was penned by Claude Sicre, member of the band Fabulous Trobadors, who we will introduce with the next track.

Fabulous Trobadors

Folklore meets Rap meets Jamaican Dancehall Beats. That’s a pretty accurate description of the combined efforts of poet and singer Claude Sicre and his younger partner, rapper Ange B. The city of Toulouse in southern France is home to both the band and the Occitanian troubadour tradition they draw on. The Fabulous Trobadors throw together bone dry Riddims, which they use like Rub-A-Dub duos from Kingston, and their own sometimes Occitan verses, a combination that leaves the listener speechless. “Y’a des garcons” also has a fantastic melody, expert intonation, and is complemented by a women’s choir second to none. Chapeau!

Benjamin Biolay

The most danceable track of Benjamin Biolay’s career so far was inspired by his newly found love for Argentina – Buenos Aires in particular. Biolay has made Buenos Aires his second home, and the city proved very influential to the music on his album “Palermo Hollywood” (named after a suburb of Buenos Aires). For all Biolay’s sleepy coolness above the Cumbia beat, his duet partner, Reggae singer Alika, adds just the right amount of spice. A combination that works very nicely, particularly because of its contrasts.

Mathieu Boogaerts

The album “I love you” was a stylistic side-step in Mathieu Boogaerts’ career. As opposed to the African, Caribbean and Latin-American inspired elements that have flowed gently into his Chansons in other work, the music on “IL Y” is pretty rough, and has left some fans baffl ed and perplexed. And yet every track of the album is hugely entertaining. It’s worth sinking into the the condensed rhythmical extravagance and lett ing the exuberant ingenuity infect you. As radical as Gainsbourg’s “Percussions”.

Nôze

The essence and characteristics of electronic music can be discussed at length with reference to Nôze. Perhaps the quirky duo have their beginnings and original label to thank for their popularity in the club-scene and as a live act. In actual fact, the list of instruments played on their album “Songs on the Rocks” is relatively long, and is certainly not limited to computers and synthesizers. And even the computer-generated beats like those on “Danse avec moi” sound incredibly organic and warm. We call it Electro-Chanson, in this case with a supremely humanoid ingredient: the delicate voice of their guest vocalist Dani Siciliano.

Thomas Dutronc

With a mother like Francoise Hardy and a father like Jacques, Thomas Dutronc has plenty of musical role models in his own family. His main influences, however, were Django Reinhardt’s guitar and the sound of Hot Club de France. And there is no way we can ignore Swing on a “La Boum”. If you are after more of the same, Pierre Lapointe's “Columbarium”, Marianne Feder’s “Le Nombril de Monde” or Matthieu Chedid’s title track fr om “Les Triplettes de Belleville” are a good place to start. We feel Thomas Dutronc strikes the right chord especially elegantly.

Agnès Bihl

Ok, alright – we’ll follow up with one more Swing track. This one, however, with its almost acoustic and beatless sound, is far from the still widespread Electro-Swing trend. Composed by Agnès Bihl, who has toured with the great Charles Aznavour, this particular duo version with Tom Poisson was recorded for radio journalist Mélanie Bauer’s CD “Ketchup & Marmelade”. Bauer incidentally has intentions similar to ours, and produces a regular radio programme of French music for a non-francophone audience. The programme is currently called “La French Pop” and is broadcast on Radio Nova – it’s worth listening in to the podcasts.

Alister

What a whopper. It’s hard to say whether Plastic Betrand or Jacques Dutronc inspired Alister to this act of madness. Somewhere between Yéyé and Punk, but in no way dull. Just take the inventive idea of looping a young girl’s cry… And the groove itself is sublime. Christophe Ernault aka Alister has always been a man of good ideas, even before his singing days – first as a TV author, then as a songwriter for the actress Adrienne Pauly, with whom he quickly created a hit. On another note, his debut was produced by Ian Dury’s son Baxter.

Marcel Bontempi

Marcel Bontempi is best known by fans of his 60’s garage band The Montesas, and he is the first German to be featured on a Le Pop compilation. His “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?”, released only on a 7 inch single, has been a hit at our parties for a while now, and people can’t help but dance to it. Even Dominique A and Fredda have swung their hips to it. These days, Bontempi performs solo, with The Montesas and with his Hillbilly-Western- Swing band The Snake Oil Company. The multitalented artist from Hessen even creates the artwork for his record covers and posters himself. Thanks for the perfect music for an evening’s last dance, Monsieur Bontempi!
