The official source for French Pop and Nouvelle Chanson. Le Pop 8 presents the whole range of the genre. A feast in 16 courses, carefully compiled, lovingly arranged and garnished with detailed liner notes. With established Le Pop artists like Fredda, -M- aka Matthieu Chedid or JP Nataf, many newcomers like Maissiat, Jimmy Hunt or the Belgian Nicolas Michaux. In addition, there are two star-studded duets: Etienne Daho meets Dominique A and Stereolab's Lætitia Sadier gives her Le Pop debut as guest singer of Belgian crooner Benjamin Schoos.

Liz De Lux

We’d be lying if we were to say this is the first time Liz de Lux made their way onto the roster at Le Pop. In fact, the Lyonbased Indie quartet made their debut on Le Pop 5 as the opening track as well, except it was Olive et Moi who covered their song. Liz de Lux came to us in a refreshingly conventional way – an actual hand-written letter accompanying their album. "Sur le dancefloor" sounds like a young Nancy Sinatra meeting early Stereolab, a casual and very pop affair. Merci to Bénédicte and company!

Mustang

Before we begin, an apology to the band is in order. We certainly could have picked any one of Mustang’s songs off of their three albums, but their radical cover of this classic Georges Brassens song left us with no choice. Listening to the trio, led by singer and guitarist Jean Felzine, you can hear their ingenious interpretational skills, not only evident here, but also from their reprise of Lescop’s "La forêt" on Le Pop 7. Chanson meets Rock 'n' Roll, but avoiding YéYé clichés. France, renowned for its retro stylings, lives up to the motto: Back to the Future!

Maissiat

One of the best discoveries Le Pop made in 2013 was at the Les Francopholies de La Rochelle music festival. The Lyonnaise artist, Amandine Maissiat (who goes by her surname) is keeping the Chanson tradition alive along with the good company of upcoming French artists such as Vianney, Juniore, and Mustang. The French media tether her influences to the likes of Alain Bashung and labelmate, Dominique A. Maissiat’s elegant songwriting reminds us of earlier albums by Keren Ann and Benjamin Biolay. "La traversée" is one of the bonus tracks that appeared on the second edition of her debut.

Fredda

Anyone who knows Fredda knows she is continually refining her style. She moves from the subtly beautiful and introspective allure on "L'ancolie" to a more rhythmic and melodious sound on "Le chant des murmures", a quality that has attracted the attention of French radio. And while her dreamy video for the single "Le chant du retour" has also been in heavy rotation on the west side of the Rhine, it is "Pendant que je me parle" that has found a home here on the eastern shores of the river. Two brilliant songs from a brillant album.

Nicolas Michaux

Those who remember Jacques Brel know well enough that chanson is also a Belgian tradition. So how could it happen that Nicolas Michaux is the very fi rst Belgian artist that appears on our compilation series. It was no bad intention! In fact, we had heard him before, as the lead singer of the sweetsounding Indie band, Été 67. Michaux launched his solo career after the band dissolved and has done considerably well for himself. "À la vie, à la mort" is part of his first solo EP, released on Bandcamp and recorded on an old analog tape recorder, that he got from the other Belgian singer on Le Pop 8, Benjamin Schoos.

Babx

Babx’s musical career path is not all that unusual considering the Parisian chanson scene. After his first two albums, he turned to composing for the stars of talent shows, produced "L" (who we introduced on Le Pop 7) and has come full circle, back to being a solo artist. The journey was evidently well worth it given the sounds off of his third album, "Drones Personnelles". His experimental side is tempered by his knack for crafting beautiful harmonies as the song "Naomi Aime" so wonderfully expresses, and we highly recommend watching the equally bewitching video.

Juniore

The brainchild behind Juniore is Parisian singer Anna Jean. Her captivating voice, coupled with the band’s robust electronic element, caught our att ention thanks to gett ing airplay on Belgian radio. You might also recognize her voice from an earlier project with Domingo. So far, Juniore has released only two songs, so we are very eager to hear their forthcoming release.

-M- aka Matthieu Chedid

Everyone in France knows the man with the falsetto voice. Going by -M- early on in his career helped to distinguish himself from his father, the famous chanson singer, Louis Chedid. The moniker has not only helped shape his own artistic identity, but it has given him the freedom to develop and perform incredibly sensational live shows earning him Super Star status at home. Last year saw the realease of "Îl", his latest, and perhaps best album yet, full of beautifully arranged multilayered songs.

Jimmy Hunt

You might already have Jimmy Hunt’s beautiful voice in your head from his duet with Coeur de Pirate on Le Pop 6. He is back with "Don't let me go", but don’t be fooled by the English title. This is, perhaps, one of the 'Frenchiest' tracks on Le Pop 8. The ambiguous title of his latest album, "Maladie d'amour" and obscure cover art can only come from a hi-brow romantic. Hunt’s flair for the classic Chanson melodies shows on this track, sounding like an old Evergreen.

Vianney

At the tender age of 23, Vianney has already been picked up by the renowned label, tôt Ou tard. The opening track on his debut album "Idées blanches" could be mistaken for an early Mathieu Boogaerts tune with its reggae beats, breezy melodies and poignant singing. While he aligns himself with the traditional French Chansons, his playful way with words and infusion of euphoria is refreshingly modern. Welcome to Le Pop, Vianney!

Benjamin Schoos

To singer, songwriter, arranger and fanzine illustrator Benjamin Schoos (aka Miam Monster Miam), Stereolab’s frontwoman Lætitia Sadier is but one among many of his collaborators. But we trust she knows this and forgives us for pointing out the obvious. If there is a Belgian record for working with celebrities, Schoos is setting the bar. Besides Sadier, he has worked with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, American legend Kramer of Shimmy Disc, April March, Alain Chamfort, the 80's starlette Lio, and Marie France. He also shared the stage with Dominique A and Bertrand Burgalat, both known here since the very first compilation. While crafting this irresistible pop song, he obviously had the duets of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg in mind. We’ll take more of that, please!

Bertrand Belin

We have been missing Bertrand Belin since he first appeared on Le Pop 3 and figured it is high time we hear him again. All four of his albums are pretty fantastic, but the song "Un déluge" from his latest album "Parcs", really illuminates why he has long been held in such regard, and rightly so. The sounds that Belin conjures from his guitar wend their way into a central theme and settle into your head. He is an elegant stylist who remains true to himself and his idea of the new chanson.

Frànçois And The Atlas Mountains

If you are thrown off by the French/English band name, there is a simple explanation. François Marry hails from Saintes in western France, but has been residing in Bristol for over a decade, hence, the dual lingua. And as it inevitably happens, living in a foreign country tends to lend itself to inventing new styles. You can hear it here – African influences interwoven with Indie pop and the Chanson. This unique blend made its way onto the renowned Domino Records label, and has also been proving to be extremely successful in Marry’s old stomping grounds. He caught our attention as a duet partner with Françoiz Breut. When he’s not working with F&TAM, Marry is often touring with the great Scottish band Camera Obscura.

Etienne Daho

Mathieu Boogaerts pointed out to us what an enormous influence Etienne Daho’s albums from the 80’s had on the fi rst Le Pop compilation, which happened to include Dominique A. Their incredible chemistry of writing has resulted in this beautiful musical gem, which makes us eager to hear more. Daho was already legendary, but his new album further cements his status.

J.P. Nataf

"Je me suis fait tout petit", starring Vannesa Paradis (and purely coincidental that it shares the same name as the Mustang’s cover of Brassens' song here on Le Pop 8), debuted in French cinemas during the summer of 2012. The beautiful soundtrack, penned by JP Nataf, is mostly instrumental with a very atmospheric quality, yet at the same time, a loose and open sound. "Pas faux" is one of the finest pieces from this brilliant songwriter. A reunion concert in the summer of 2014 with Les Innocents has piqued our curiousity about a possible comeback. Until we know more, we want to hear more JP Nataf!

Sammy Decoster

The last piece on Le Pop 8 rubs shoulders with one of our other compilations, "Tucson Songs", a collection of songs from the dusty desert city in southern Arizona. Decoster recorded "Je mentirais" there with producer Jim Waters. Before his solo career , he had only sung in English with his former bands Tornado and Ultra Orange. Ironically, it was during his US excursion that he discovered his mother tongue (French) suits him much bett er. Decoster, who was on Le Pop 5, lives in a small village in the Alps and is a studio musician with the band Verone. Most recently, he made Fredda’s latest album "Le chant des murmures" extra shiny with his extraordinary guitar playing. Thank you dear Sammy, thank you dear listeners. Until next time.
