While working on Le Pop 2 and 3 we repeatedly realised how many fantastic duets the new chanson has produced and how many hits are among them. For example, "Le 22 bar" by Dominique A and his then partner Françoiz Breut was his career breakthrough. Jérôme Minière's duet with actress Karin Vanasse was always a surefire dancefloor hit for our DJ team. Albin de la Simone invited the then still completely unknown Canadian artist Feist into his studio and had her sing in French following onomatopoeic instructions. We were especially pleased about cross-generational duets of such celebrities as Jane Birkin (with Mickey 3D) and Jacques Higelin (as duet partner of Jeanne Cherhal). At that time exclusively on "Le Pop En Duo" : the French version of Something Stupid - "Ces mots stupides" by the dream couple Jeanne Cherhal and Albin de la Simone. Also exclusive : the duet of Toma and his wife Agnes aka Api "L'amour à la plage" (original by Niagara).

Pierre Bondu

Nantes is the cradle of the New Chanson. We've mentioned this before, haven't we? It was in Nantes that Pierre Bondu first met the defining figures of the early years and served as guest musician and arranger for Dominique A, Katerine and Françoiz Breut. We took »Raisonnable« from Bondu's debut album »Ramdam« (1999). Like some of his colleagues Bondu also writes film scores (»La Répétition« starring Emmanuelle Béart). His duet-partner is Julie B. Bonnie, who has recently recorded a solo album alongside her main occupation as lead singer for the band Cornu. Pierre Bondu's 2nd album »Quelqu’un Quelque Part« was released by Le Village Vert in the summer of 2004.

Pascal Parisot

Frédérique Dastrevigne is much more then just a background singer for Pascal Parisot: they make a great team, not only in their private life, but also on stage and in the studio. It is only with the help of Frédérique Dastrevigne that the Parisot-Sound comes into its own. No surprise then that Frédérique Dastrevigne writes beautiful songs too, which she inexplicably hasn't yet found a record label for. From Pascal Parisot's current album »Wonderful« (2003) we took »Tout Va Bien« – a great song with lyrics about the less great things in life.

Jerome Miniere

French pop culture is unimaginable without film scores. Bands like Rob and Air refer back to the music of Michel Legrand or Francis Lai (»Un Homme Et Une Femme«, »Emmanuelle«). Georges Delerue's scores for numerous Nouvelle Vague movies are still highly influential. The Nouvelle Scène is a case in point: »Histoire D’Espions« is the glorious first track of the soundtrack for Céline Aril's »Du Pic Au Coeur« (Québec 1999). Jérôme Minière is joined by lead actress Karine Vanasse, who after starring in »Du Pic Au Coeur« went on to become one of the most successful actors in franco-canadian theatre, film and TV productions.

Stefie Shock

The name says it all: Canadian Stefie Shock's album »Le Décor« published in 2003 is full of shockingly good pop tunes: highly melodic, up-tempo and cleverly arranged. Bewitched by all these wonderful songs the duet »Les Averses« nearly escaped our attention. We noticed it just in time and now Stefie Shock has his European premiere on »le pop en duo«. You'll be hearing more from Stevie Shock in the future. Take our word for it.

Benjamin Biolay

Mad about Benjamin! Biolay is the current darling of the Nouvelle Chanson. Together with his wife, the actress and famous daughter Chiara Mastroianni, Biolay forms a pop cultural dream couple, which couldn't have been better invented. The universal interest in Biolay's music is undoubtedly generated by his glamorous life style. Good job he is much more then just an elegant smoker! There is no doubt about his qualities as arranger and songwriter. After numerous projects with other artists it was only logical to record an album with Chiara. Its title »Home« reflects the spontaneity and intimacy of the record and if you want a comparison: Mastroianni/Biolay are much closer to Hardy/Dutronc than to Birkin/Gainsbourg.

Albin De La Simone

Albin de la Simone is one of the more recent discoveries of French Pop and last years debut album became almost an instant classic. Canadian singer Feist's debut "Let It Die", also released last year, was produced by Gonzales to international acclaim. Feist has worked with Jane Birkin and Dani before, but »Elle Aime« is her first all-french duet, which caused some minor problems, as Albin de la Simone told us: Since Feist doesn't know any French, she had to sing the words from a phonetic transcription! Simone was impressed by the result and especially by the seeming ease with which Feist took to her role. So are we!

Katerine

Another anglo-french duet which plays on its bi-linguality, this gives a good example of the ambiguous humour of Katerine's »Mauvaises Fréquentations«-phase, ca.1996. Meanwhile Katerine's oeuvre has moved in all sorts of directions, defying easy classification. Only the following can be said with certainty: Katerine is one of France's most brilliant writers and arrangers while »Parlez-Vous ...« is rightly considered a classic of the Nouvelle Scène. Erin Moran's most recent success was the »A Girl Called Eddy« project.

Camille

Sébastien Martels solo debut »Ragalet« is a very recent release, spring 2004. Martel however is not new to the French scene, having been a member of the mysterious band Vercoquin (just like Thierry Stremler of Le Pop 1 fame). His partner Camille recently made an impact as the singer for the project 'Nouvelle Vague' and of course on Le Pop 2. We are at a loss as to whether the 'VF' in the title of the song refers to 'Version Francaise' or to 'Vache Folle' (Mad Cow's Disease) – but either way, for the album the song was recorded in English. Our French version was released as a single.

Mickey 3D

Jane Birkin doesn't require an introduction anymore. After a long tour and the Gainsbourg-cover project »Arabesque« she released an album filled with duets (»Rendez-Vous« 2004). We picked the opening song of that album, the wonderful »Je M'Appelle Jane«, which features brilliantly self ironic ‘me Jane, you no Tarzan’ lyrics. Her partner (‘me Mickey, you no Minnie’) is Mickey 3D, one of the most popular indie acts in France and already featured on Le Pop 2. The song demonstrates yet again the easy coexistence of the Nouvelle Scène Française and the great names of French Chanson.

Toma

Back in the 80s the duo Niagara had hits with songs like »Tchicki Boum« or »L’Amour À La Plage«. The latter was a summer hit of 1986 and has now undergone complete renovation, courtesy of Toma and exlusively on ‘le pop en duo’. Toma's version is as cool and chilled out as a perfect day on the beach should be, and if you saw Toma perform live on the 2004 Le Pop-Tour, you know that this is no coincidence: ‘chilled out’ is this guys middle name!

M alias Mathieu Chedid is a megastar in France: Dressed in pink suits and adorned by his trademark M-shaped hairdo he enters ever larger stages through the heart-shaped hole of a giant inflatable guitar. Once safely on stage, M fires up an enormous glamrock-superstar-show, encourages his audience to light their lighters and leaves no one in doubt about his prime conviction: pop is a game he enjoys to play. So far Chedid has managed to stay on top of this game, fans and colleagues keep supporting him, in spite of his enormous success. The album »Qui De Nous Deux« was his first to be released in Germany, our duet however was taken from another film soundtrack: »Peau d’Ange« (2002, Vincent Perez). Céline is Chedid's partner.

Vincent Delerm

Three of the great names of the Nouvelle Scène Francaise united in one wonderful song. Both Keren Ann and Dominique A have acquired an ever growing following beyond French borders (perhaps not wholly unrelated to their appearance on Le Pop 1). Vincent Delerm's (Le Pop 2) 2nd album Kensington Square (2004), which we took this song from, is breaking records all over France. Vincent Delerm is the narrator-figure in »Veruca Salt Et Frank Black«. He mediates between the thoughts of Keren Ann and Dominique A, who turn this playful »duet for three« into a truly intimate listening experience thanks to the brilliance of their voices.

Another premiere: When Albin de la Simone offered us the rights for the original release of this tune, we were only too happy to accept, and not only out of gratitude for the kind gesture: This version of »Something Stupid«, sung en duo with his girlfriend Jeanne Cherhal, is quite simply too good to miss. And after seeing the two of them holding hands like teenage pupils you know with certainty that the three words, around which the song revolves, can't possibly be all that stupid.

Dominique A

This song was Dominique A's breakthrough in France. The duet with his then girlfriend Françoiz Breut (Le Pop) sold 100.000 copies, the album »La Mémoire Neuve«, from which it was taken, is considered by many as his best and won him the ‘Victoires de la Musique’ in 1997. Breut went on to become an acclaimed solo artist, her third studio album is due in 2005. Dominique A released the fantastic »Tout sera comme avant« in 2004, after the compilation »À L’Arrivée« this is his first studio album to be released in Germany.

Alexis HK

This year's Francofolies de la Rochelle, one of the most eminent festivals for contemporary French music, saw a stunning performance of Alexis HK: His band’s concept of chanson is traditional only at first sight. Looking closer, one discovers how the dominant accordion is just one part of a carefully designed soundscape, which he creates in collaboration with producer Olaf Hund. Alexis HK's brilliant album »Belle Ville« (2003) proves: This is néochanson at its best. Besides, »Son Histoire« is the first Le Pop-song ever to mention the hometown of our label: Cologne!

Jeanne Cherhal

Bedtime listening or not, this remains the ideal final song for »le pop en duo«. Jeanne Cherhal, another of the great discoveries of 2004's Francofolies is paying tribute to her duet partner Jacques Higelin – one of the central figures of French Pop over the last 20 years. After some live recordings the label Tôt ou Tard released Jeanne Cherhal's first studio album »Douze Fois Par An« in 2004 – a debut we can't recommend more highly!
